Week Two: Eisenhower's Farewell

Our basic purposes have been to keep the peace; to foster progress in human achievement; and to enhance liberty, dignity, and integrity among people and among nations.
— Dwight D. Eisenhower, Farewell Address, 1961

20th century and the televised farewell address of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Listen carefully to the first part of the speech when President Eisenhower consciously echoes Washington’s farewell.

The Farewell is considered Eisenhower’s best and most-important speech. In it, the former-General warns Americans to be on guard against a “military-industrial complex” acquiring “unwarranted influence” in the halls of power. The speech runs a little more than 16 minutes.

The War Memorial is a non-partisan organization.
